Watering Recommendations
Essential guidelines to ensure your landscape thrives year-round
The Key to a Thriving Landscape
Proper watering is critical to establishing healthy lawns and plantings. Follow these guidelines to ensure your turf, trees, shrubs, and flowers get the moisture they need to thrive.
Remember: consistent watering in the first few weeks is essential for successful establishment. These recommendations are based on over 100 years of experience caring for landscapes throughout Oak Park and River Forest.
Turf Seed
Because new seed lacks roots, it requires frequent light watering to keep the seed bed moist. Consistent moisture is essential for germination.
Watering Schedule
- Water very lightly and frequently using a fine mist or light sprinkler
- Keep the top inch of soil damp daily-do not let the seed bed dry out
- Continue frequent watering until grass is established and reaches mowing height
New Sod
New sod requires careful watering to establish roots and ensure successful transition. Follow this schedule closely for best results.
First Two Weeks
- Keep sod and soil moist throughout the morning with about half an inch of water daily
- Let leaves dry in the evening to prevent fungal diseases
- Stay off new sod until after the first mow (around two weeks)
- Mow high, removing no more than one-third of the blade
After Three to Four Weeks
- Reduce watering frequency and increase duration to encourage deep root growth
- Transition to watering less often but more deeply
Shrubs & Trees
Newly planted trees and shrubs need regular, deep watering to establish strong root systems. DO NOT rely on rainfall alone-most rain only moistens the top few inches of soil.
First Three Weeks
- Water slowly at the base of the plant 3-4 times per week
- Smaller shrubs: 5-7 minutes per session
- Small trees: 5-10 minutes per session
- Larger trees: 10-15 minutes per session
Next Three Weeks
- Reduce frequency to 2-3 times per week
- Gradually increase watering duration to promote deep root growth
Annuals, Perennials & Groundcovers
Shallow-rooted plants like annuals, perennials, and groundcovers need frequent watering to establish. The top six inches of soil should be moistened thoroughly.
First Two Weeks
- Water daily, ensuring the top 6 inches of soil are moistened
- Water in the morning to allow foliage to dry before evening
After Two Weeks
- Switch to every other day watering
- Exception: During very hot weather (>85°F) or when wilting is observed, continue daily watering
The Role of Mulch
A good layer of mulch (2-3 inches) helps regulate soil moisture by reducing evaporation and moderating soil temperature. Mulch is particularly beneficial for trees, shrubs, and perennials, significantly reducing watering needs once plants are established.
Benefits of Proper Mulching
- Reduces water evaporation from soil surface
- Regulates soil temperature to protect roots
- Suppresses weeds that compete for water
- Improves soil structure as it breaks down over time
